Too heavy for the trailer? Transferring Motorhome & Transporter safely
The dream of owning a motorhome or buying a large panel van (e.g. Sprinter, Ducato) for the company is done. But then often follows the rude awakening during transport planning.
Anyone trying to have a vehicle of the 3.5-ton class transported quickly encounters logistical obstacles that do not exist with a normal car. The standard solutions "trailer" or "forwarding agency" suddenly become problematic or extremely expensive.
Why this is so and why transfer on own wheels is unrivaled cheap especially in this vehicle class, we explain here.
The "Weight Trap": Why the normal trailer is not enough
Many customers (and even some hobby transporters) massively underestimate the weight of modern transporters and motorhomes.
The problem lies in the detail: A conventional car transport trailer, pulled by a car or SUV, usually has a permissible total weight of 3,500 kg. Subtracting the dead weight of the trailer often leaves only a payload of approx. 2,600 to 2,700 kg.
However, an empty VW Crafter, a Mercedes Sprinter or a converted motorhome often weigh 2,800 kg to 3,200 kg empty.
- Legality: Transport on a standard trailer is simply forbidden (overloading).
- Safety: The combination becomes unstable.
- Risk: In the event of a check, hefty fines and the prohibition of further travel threaten.
The problem with the forwarding agency (Truck transport)
If the trailer is ruled out, often only the large truck car transporter remains. But here there is another problem: The size.
Motorhomes and panel vans are high and wide.
- Volume prices: Forwarding agents often calculate according to space requirements. A high motorhome often blocks two parking spaces on the truck (because the level above cannot be lowered). This doubles the price.
- Height limit: A motorhome loaded onto a truck quickly exceeds the permissible total height of 4 meters for bridges and tunnels. Many standard routes are thus impassable.
The solution: Transfer on own wheels (up to 3.5t)
This is exactly where pa-ueberstellung.at plays its biggest trump card. For us, it makes no difference whether we transport a small VW Polo or a large Fiat Ducato Maxi.
Since we drive the vehicle and do not load it, all the problems mentioned above disappear:
- Weight is not an issue: As long as the vehicle does not exceed a permissible total weight of 3.5t (driving license class B), we can move it without any problems. The actual payload does not matter.
- No height problems: Since the vehicle rolls on the road, bridges and tunnels are not an obstacle.
- Fair price: While forwarding agents charge surcharges for "bulky goods", our calculation effort remains almost identical to car transport.
For which vehicles is this particularly worthwhile?
- Motorhomes & Campervans (Semi-integrated, Alcove, Panel van)
- Transporters & Delivery vans (Mercedes Sprinter, VW Crafter, Ford Transit, Fiat Ducato etc.)
- Chassis (e.g. for superstructures)
- Food Trucks
Conclusion: Save yourself the "Special Transport"
If your vehicle is roadworthy, there is no reason to pay hundreds of euros extra for a special transport on the truck just because the vehicle is 200kg too heavy for a trailer.
We bring your "big one" safely, legally and cost-efficiently to the destination. Whether from the dealer in Germany to Austria or between two company locations.
